What is a Retaining Wall?

A retaining wall is a structure that holds or retains soil behind it. There are many types of materials that can be used to create retaining walls like concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. Some are easy to use, others have a shorter life span, but all can retain soil.

What does a Retaining Wall do?

A retaining wall can be used purely as a landscaping feature - it might separate different areas in your outdoor living space or just create visual interest. More often though, retaining walls are used to prevent soil erosion and create flat areas on a sloping block of land. Your walls may either be a simple design or quite complex, depending on what you need them for and how high you want them to be.

What are Retaining Walls made of?

Timber, wet or dry stone, brick and concrete are among the most common materials for constructing retaining walls.

Timber looks great, but its vulnerability to rot and white ants (termites) makes it the least effective material to use in retaining walls.

Wet stone (stone and mortar) walls also look good and are very strong, however stone can be expensive and difficult to install due to its weight.

A brick wall will need strong foundations and a good design or else it will crumble quickly. Concrete is cheap and strong, but it doesn’t have the greatest visual appeal. Having said that, it can be clad in other materials.

Boulder rock walls are well priced, strong, low maintenance and quick to install, making them one of the most popular choices for retaining walls.

What are the typical steps to building a retaining wall?

Measure, Design & free quote - Our experts will help you envisage the final design of your retaining wall and the new usable space that you will create.

Excavation & rubbish removal

Material delivery

- Natural Rock (no nuts, bolts, screws or mortar required!) its rock on rock, just like the pyramids.

- Ballast - Smaller rock used to fill in behind the face wall

- Ag pipe - May be required in certain situations & depending on the angle of the wall and the materials chosen to manage water drainage. Our experts will advise at the free design & quote stage.

Base layer - Our operators will lay the first layer so you can see how it builds from there

Soil & soft landscaping - We can add soil as we complete saving you time and money and we have landscaping partners that we work with and trust.

Cleanup - We will leave your site clean and tidy and looking magnificent!

Why is working with a Registered Builder important?

It is required by legislation for projects in excess of $16k
We have Builders Insurance & Public liability cover up to $20 million
We are reputable and trusted
We ensure there is a Builders contract signed with every project protecting both parties rights and outlining our obligations.

How about payment?

We require a 5% deposit once the contract is signed.
Then we will schedule your project with one of our expert construction teams.
When the project starts and rock has been delivered on-site we require 50% of the total contract amount.
We may require progress payments at agreed stages specified in the contract.
We require final payment on completion of the project and cleanup.
Completing a rock wall involves upfront investment from RWM in our expert construction teams, trucks, excavators and the natural rock that we source and supply. We pride ourselves on paying our people and our suppliers immediately upon invoice and we respectfully request that you do the same with us.
